It seems that the harsher the climate conditions, the more high quality antioxidants are produced for the plants own survival!

Researchers at the University of California, at Davis tested a variety of wines, to determine which types have the highest concentrations of flavonoids.

Both Merlots and zinfandels have fewer flavonoids than other red wines.

Their results concluded that the flavonoid favorite is Cabernet Sauvignon, followed closely by Petit Syrah and Pinot Noir.

White wine had significantly smaller amounts.

Recently, researchers have found that moderate wine consumption may be beneficial to more than just your heart, hence best red wines.

One study found that the antioxidant resveratrol, which is prevalent in the skin of grapes, may inhibit tumor development in some cancers. Another study indicated that resveratrol aided in the formation of nerve cells, which experts believe may be helpful in the treatment of neurological diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.

Until now, research has suggested the bulk of grapes' heart-healthy benefits come from antioxidant compounds primarily found in their skins. These compounds are called anthocyanins and contribute to the color of the fruit.

In the making of wines, the grape skins are crushed along with the pulp. But the skins are quickly separated out during the making of most white wines.

But researchers say new evidence suggests the pulp of grapes appears to be just as heart-healthy as the skin, thanks to other types of antioxidants present in the flesh.

This challenges the notion that wines, like cabernet sauvignon, merlot, and pinot noir, are better for the heart than white wines, such as chardonnay, sauvignon blanc, and Riesling.

Researchers say the grape skin extract did contain high levels of anthocyanins — part of a class of antioxidants known as polyphenols.

The pulp extract did not contain anthocyanins; but it was rich in other types of polyphenols.

As we all know, chemicals damage the soil, the vine, the air, the water, the farmers, and, in all likelihood, all of us down the road.

Additionally, many organic vineyards harvest by hand, rather than using mechanical pickers. This allows only the ripest and healthiest bunches to be picked, with the minimum amount of stress to the vine, fruit or soil.

Some feel that organic wine is actually better than non organic, tasting more flavorful and "cleaner." That's what we hear most often. Of course, it's always a matter of personal opinion. However, more and more, consumers AND critics are beginning to think that they do taste better, and they definitely don't carry the chemical load.

Château Bousquette

Château Bousquette is Located 10 miles North of Béziers (A town made famous during the Cathar crusades), it lies in the center of the Languedoc region, only 20 miles from the Mediterranean Sea.

I stood on that rich red earth, on the top of that hill, totally intoxicated by the palpable scents of thyme, rosemary, pine trees and lavender, merging together under the sun rays and exuding a completely unique aroma, the smell of the "garrigue".”

The word aptly describes the place: a simple family estate nestled in pine trees, lavender and thyme, overlooking miles of vineyards stretching all the way to the foot of the volcanic mountains known as the Cévennes.

"Although further study is needed to identify the principal ingredients responsible for the cardioprotective abilities of the grape flesh, to the best of our knowledge, our study provides evidence for the first time that the flesh of grapes is equally cardioprotective with respect to the skins," writes researcher M. Falchi of the University of Milan and colleagues.

The antioxidants in wine and grape juice reduce blood stickiness, and this may reduce the clotting that causes heart attacks and strokes; they also relax vessels and inhibit the oxidation of LDL (the "bad") cholesterol to its dangerous form. Similar benefits can be seen from the antioxidant flavonoids found in tea and chocolate, are much the same as wine.

Wine's antioxidants also fight cancer; antibacterial effects fight destructive superoxides to reduce tissue injury, these compounds may prevent cancers of the stomach and other organs.

The antioxidant quercetin has been seen to inhibit the growth of cancer and leukemia cells, and to boost anti-cancer chemotherapy.

Improved brain and muscle function also has been associated with moderate wine consumption and when you add fresh fruits like blueberries, strawberries and spinach their antioxidants seem to have an affinity to the brain, which improves cognitive function.
A number of very nasty bacteria and viruses are inactivated by wine and by grapes (but, surprisingly, in some cases not by alcohol). The best red wines improve brain, muscle, heart, infection, viruses, and even weight loss!

You may ask, why not eat just fruits and veggies, and leave the alcohol?
Alcohol, in moderation, contributes at least half of wine's cardiovascular benefits, and provides numerous other health benefits, and little, if any, risk.

So if you follow the plan, have the best red wine that you can, but don't knock white wine totally, and have no more than two daily!

In fact, it may even enhance the desired actions of the antioxidants in the enriching form of wine, which is a package that can't be beat.

The article goes on to say that "...after testing 65 red wines, "we quickly found that there were large differences from seemingly similar vintages from different geographical origins," says Dr. Alan Crozier, a plant biochemist involved in the research at the University of Glasgow. But despite the lofty reputation of red wines from France, it was Chile that seemed to hold the lion's share of flavonols and for best red wines.

"We found that Chilean wines were particularly rich," Crozier states. "They were higher in flavonols than their equivalents from other parts of the globe." But the 'why' behind this phenomenon is something less obvious."

Crozier and his colleagues plan to pursue the Chilean red wine anomaly further and their research into fruits and vegetables has been helped by a large-scale screening program funded by supermarket giant Safeway in Britain.

As for the research to date, Crozier says, "I think the main thing is you can just have a minor change in your diet with a potential to significantly improve your prospects." Over the course of the next year, they hope to have a better handle on why flavonols are expressed better in some foods than others – and provide a more complete list of healthy choices. Until then, Chilean red wine and cherry tomatoes are a safe bet.
